Labor Notes is a non-profit organization that has been the voice of union activists who want to "put the movement back in the labor movement" since 1979.
For years, the labor movement has been reeling from an employers' offensive. We now have real lower wages, less job security, and smaller, weaker unions than the previous generation. Employers are turning what used to be good, steady jobs into poorly-paid drudgery, often dangerous and stressful. Some of us work more overtime than we want; others must make due with part-time or temporary jobs.
For the most part, our union leaders are not doing a good job of reversing this trend. Some are on the golf course; other just don't understand that things have changed -- that the old "business-as-usual" way of thinking won't work anymore. Some see the need for major changes, such as new organizing, but don't believe that democracy in our unions is key to making these changes.
Labor Notes believes that if the labor movement is to regain the numbers and the power we have lost in past decades, we must deal with the problems we face. Some of these problems are a result of outside influences, but some are our movement's own failings.

The Association for Union Democracy (AUD)
is a pro-labor, non-profit organization dedicated to advancing the principles and practices of democratic trade unionism in the North American labor movement. It is the premise of AUD that internal democracy makes unions stronger and better able to fight for the rights and interests of working people. We provide organizing, educational, and legal assistance to union members fighting for greater control of their unions. No other organization is dedicated solely to advancing the democratic rights of union members.

If Sam were alive today he would feel totally ashamed, embarrassed and disturbed by what the surviving Walton family have done to Sam's dream. Sam believed the success in any Wal*Mart store was the direct result of the integrity and hard work of its employees.
But, now that dream has turned into a modern retail nightmare! The emphasis on the associates has been replaced by the all mighty dollar!
Because of there NEW philosophy, Wal*Mart has begun to show a badly tarnished image. No longer does Wal*Mart stand for the American worker.
With every passing day a new headline shocks the American consumer. Over 1 1/2 MILLION female worker's suing Wal*Mart for unfair treatment while in their employ. Wages so low that single parents are forced to apply for public assistance in attaining decent health coverage.
The crumbling of small towns and cities due to Wal*Mart's predatory price reductions leaving our once proud traditional mom & pop stores and businesses to be forced out of business forever!
The Walton family, sons and daughters of the late Wal-Mart founder Sam Walton, retail empire are worth $102.5 billion...that's right...$102.5 Billion! You mean they can't afford to give you an extra $100 in your paycheck every month?! What could the Walton's want with so much money anyway?!

This site is designed for workers who feel the need to do something about conditions at work. By “troublemaker” we mean someone who dares to defend her or his rights and those of fellow workers. That often means making waves and making management uncomfortable—so management tends to cause such brave souls “troublemakers.” Together, this site and the handbook are an organizing manual for workers who want justice from their employers and control over their lives at work.

American Rights at Work has launched Workers’ Rights Watch: Eye on the NLRB. Working directly from the NLRB’s own decisions, our feature will shine a spotlight on how the inadequacies of the law extinguish or delay organizing campaigns and do little to discourage the firing, harassment and discrimination against workers for exercising their legal rights to form a union and collectively bargain.

How Do We Feel?
In today’s world we need stronger leadership dedicated to strengthening the solidarity of our unions. In the beginning our founders fought for their safety and fair pay, along the way we have lost sight of what we were fighting for. Today we are sacrificing our founding rights for menial advances in less important areas. It is our goal, priority and dream to help unite, strengthen and once again empower the legacy of the union. We want to promote knowledge to all members so that they can effectively govern their unions. Only by realizing that times have changed can we competently take the steps to direct our unions into the new millennia. We are at a unique and crucial point in our union lives, the addition of new members in a new era. It is imperative that we educate these new brothers and sisters, after all they will be the future presidents and shop committee members. This new generation will be the ones left fighting for the present leadership’s retiree benefits as well as bringing in new members. To leave them uneducated and unprepared is to destroy our unions from the inside out. We are forced to fight everyday to keep our jobs in America, to keep our standard of living, and for our civil rights. We need educated members to continue setting the standards of the working class people.

The United Food and Commercial Workers International (UFCW) is a labor union which represents about 1.3 million workers in the United States and Canada.
UFCW members are employed in a variety of industries; including retail, meat packing, and food processing.
The average UFCW worker earns between $25,000 and $30,000 a year, yet there are over 450 officers and staff of the UFCW who were paid in excess of $100,000 in 2005. The international alone accounted for 150 of those.
In spite of a series of concessionary contracts which have been negotiated in local after local, the UFCW has continued to increase its per capita dues and its compensation to officers and staff.

-
SEIU Member Activists for Reform Today (SMART) is an organization of rank-and-file members of SEIU who believe that members are the real source of strength for our Union and the people behind every victory. Members have fought for years in our work sites, in the streets, and in the halls of government to make SEIU the largest and strongest union in the country – now 1.9 million workers strong. Members also know that growth is critical to our success, and to rebuilding a fighting labor movement – but not growth at all costs, and not without full participation of the members.
