Grade Your Union Rep!

Welcome to the “Grade Your Union Rep" thread. If you are here you either have seen our flyer http://groceryworkers.org/grade-your-rep-2.pdf/download going into workplaces or you have been emailed by a friend or coworker, either way we are glad you are here!

This thread has been posted to give members of unions like the UFCW a way to voice their opinions on whether they feel their Union Representatives are doing the job that members are paying them to do.

As a Union member have you ever experienced contacting your union rep for help only to find that your rep was more helpful to the corporate boss than yourself? Well your not alone! Union members across the US & Canada have had these same bad experiences and many horror stories have been written on website’s and blogs all over the internet! But now it’s time to fight back!

With this thread we intend to put these “corporate friendly” business unions under the microscope by detailing and documenting every union representative that “is” or “isn’t”doing the job that you the dues paying member is paying for! No better place to start than one of the worst offenders...the UFCW.

We are asking people to login here at www.uncharted.ca (You don’t have to use your real name) make up a user name. We would like to see people tell us what union local they belong to and what their union representatives name is then precede to tell us how your union rep grades!

Does your rep get an A+? Is your rep a Scholar, does s/he work for you making your concerns and your rights in the workplace their up most priority?

Or does your rep get an F? Is your rep a Dunce? Failing you and the other members and only concerned about collecting dues and playing “partners” with the corporate boss?

Just give a simple grade of your rep or give us detailed stories good or bad on how your union rep has served you. Our goal is to see what union locals are doing the job they are payed for and which ones are failing the people who matter the most...the members/workers!

The key to making this action work is...PARTICIPATION! The UFCW International monitors this site and if they see many of their reps names posted for the world to see as failing the members it could put a lot of pressure on union like the UFCW to better serve their membership.

We are also asking members to print this flyer and continue to get into your workplaces.

Below are a list of questions to review and consider before grading your rep.

How often do you see your rep?
Assuming a 5 point scale:
5= more than once a month
4 = once a month
3 = once in a while
2 = once a year
1 = I have a rep?

When your rep visits your workplace does s/he:
5= stop by and say hello to you and other members
4= let you know s/he's there and available to talk to you
3= talk only to the steward
2= talk only to the managers
1= sneak in, sneak out - there hasn't been a rep sighting in years

When you call your rep with a problem or question, does s/he:
5=get back to you within 24 hours with a good answer
4=gets back to you within 24 hours with a promise to look into your concern, calls back within 2 days with a good answer
3=gets back to you within a couple of weeks, answer is sometimes good, sometimes half-assed
2=follow-up phones calls needed, usually doesn't know the answer, doesn't call back
1=that jerk has a phone?

Prior to contract negotiations, does your rep:
5=hold bargaining input sessions open to all members, take careful note of your issues and priorities and convey these to the bargaining team
4=ask members what they want to see in their new contract and promise to convey this to the bargaining team
3=hold an "information meeting", take note of your concerns and say s/he doesn't think there's much of a chance you'll get anything
2=go on vacation
1=What? Contract negotiations? There's goes my pension plan!

Again this action will only work if members participate, the more that come here and grade their reps, the more pressue the reps will be under to do their jobs better! If your rep is already doing their job then they should have no problem with this thread or the flyers in the workplaces!

So let's hear it! Scholar or Dunce?
